When the Ilford Witness was developed, it was originally a design by the two befriended designers Robert Sternberg (formerly Leitz Wetzlar) and Werner Julius Rothschild (formerly Zeiss Ikon) from around 1945-47. The Witness therefore combines certain properties of the Leica and the Contax. Post-war production of the Leica IIIc and Contax IIa cameras had only just started again and at Leitz and as well as at Zeiss were still difficulties in producing even the already existing camera models in the required quantities. Sternberg and Rothschild therefore turned to Ilford in 1947 with their modern concept 35 mm camera. Ilford responded openly. It was planned there to develop or bring out a number of camera models and therefore agreed to produce the Witness. Only from 1953 a total of about 350 units of the Witness were made. In very good condition, with Dallmeyer Super-Six Anastigmat 2 “ f/1.9 No. 443466. Filter ring with small dent, small scratch on top plate.
